The
fraternity was reactivated. Brothers Adriano
Garcia, Arturo Atienza, Renato Constantino,
Bienvenido Ejercito, and Benedicto Balderama
were the moving spirits. They also formed
the Board of Editors of the 1942-46 Philippinensian.
Adriano Garcia, as President of the University
Senior Council, headed the editorial board
of the first postwar Philippinensian.
They realized that the continuing relevance
and influence of the fraternity on University
and national affairs depended on its being
able to expand and recruit members with potential
early in their lives on campus, so the fraternity
Constitution was amended to allow admission
of members still in their pre-law course.
With this amendment, Brothers Leonardo B.
Perez, and Froilan Bacungan were among the
first post-war recruits.
Somewhere along the line, the scholastic
standing rule was relaxed. However, the Alpha
Phi Beta has been fortunate since its screening
processes have avoided the entry of the less
qualified. On the whole, and in the long
run, almost all of those admitted to membership
have proven themselves to be worthy assets.
The recruitment policy emphasizing scholarship
and academic qualifications was carried over
into the early post-war years. It has paid
off for the Alpha. The Roll of Editors of
the Philippine Collegian, Philippine Law
Journal, Philippinensian, and Philippine
Law Register from the late 40s to the 80s
are replete with Alphans. Since 1940, Alphans
have consistently been in the top 10 of the
annual Bar Examinations.
The Order of Lord
Chancellors and the fraternity's Roll of
Lords contain some of the more distinguished
names in the Philippines serving Government
in the Executive, the Judiciary, the Legislature,
and the Military, in legal education, in
business and industry, and in the profession.
Several Brothers
have also been Bar Examiners, an acknowledgment
of their eminence in their fields of practice.
The founders showed the way. The succeeding
generations of Brothers have performed equally
well. Now, the promise of the Alpha is even
brighter with
the maturing of the crops raised in the 50s
to the 90s.
The Alumni Chapter has assured that as the
fraternity goes into middle age,
it will build on its past to achieve greater
heights in the future, and help establish
a context where with Brothers standing by
Brothers, it will make its place in the sun.
The founders have shown the way. The succeeding
generations can do no less.
It remains the responsibility of the resident
brothers to provide the well of talent that
shall ensure that the fraternity survives
as a relevant being on campus; supply the
reservoir of ability that will make it a
continuing factor in national affairs, and
make certain that the honor of the fraternity
is unsullied by failure
in responsibility.
Meanwhile, all Alphans have to keep forging
ahead with the thought that when one has
achieved excellence, he has to strive even
harder to remain on top.
